My name is Dan Solly, I am a Triathlete racing at Sprint and Olympic distance being part of the Great Britain Age Group Team, and so the demands on my time in terms of training, as well as having a full time job and a young family mean that I have a huge reliance on kit which is of high quality, which minimises the risk of niggles and injuries, whilst also delivering consistently high performance at international race level.

I've been a Hoka One One running shoe convert since I first ran in my Clifton 5 shoes 3 years ago, following a gait analysis at Whirlwind Sports in Truro, Cornwall. I had been suffering some right side knee pain having previously used many different shoe brands, however the analysis revealed that I inclined towards over pronation on my right side, and so we looked at different options but found, during video analysis, that the nature of the Hoka family sole, being wide and supportive as well as very cushioned, meant that the over pronation disappeared being replaced with a much more neutral foot plant, and an effective toe off, returning my gait to a perfectly neutral position. Literally overnight, the knee pain disappeared.

Since then, my main shoe has been the various iterations of the Clifton shoe (now in it's 8th generation) which provides me with the support and consistency I need for running 25-30 miles a week. I was introduced to the Rincon racing shoe, which was an absolute revelation as it was similar in feature set to the Clifton, yet with reduced weight, the same cushioned sole but with more snap and flat line speed, and this was the shoe that I raced with in Lausanne in 2019, at the World Triathlon Sprint Championships, coming 25th overall and 6th GB team member over the line.

This year, Whirlwind have supported me by delivering the Carbon X2 which has been the most dramatic and advanced shoe to date. When I first put the shoe on, it was so incredibly comfortable, even without socks due to its in-built sock liner, that I knew it was going to work incredibly well as a racing flat. The insertion of a carbon plate in the sole completely transforms the flex of the shoe - it's actually virtually impossible to bend the sole using your hands and brute force, however when you're wearing them, the stiffness is far less noticeable and that incredible trademark comfort is still retained. The difference is in the run; the shoe is snappy when at full race pace, and so, lets say you're running 5:50 - 6 minute mile pace, the shoe delivers a supportive spring and bounce as a result of the energy store and release in the carbon plate. As a result, at the recent European Triathlon Championships in Valencia Spain, my run off the bike felt comfortable and energised, and I achieved my lifetime best placing of 13th overall and 4th GB athlete to finish in age group. I would definitely put this down to the efficiency, comfort and straight ahead, top end speed that the Carbon X2 is designed to deliver, and as well as being hugely comfortable, easy to get on and off, highly tuned and race specific, it's also still a fantastic looking shoe with its looks matching its racing pedigree!

The Carbon X 2 is an ULTRA-COMFORTABLE and DYNAMIC shoe. It makes my stride easier by propelling me forward every time.

I really like Carbon X 2. It is very SOFT, but as soon you put pressure down, it shoots you forward with this amazing RESPONSE.

Patrik Nilsson, HOKA athlete

I’m a big fan of the Carbon X 2. I find it to be more AGGRESSIVE and RESPONSIVE than the original and very well suited for longer efforts. I will use them for 10k races when racing eventually returns!

Sam Stabler, HOKA athlete

The Carbon X 2 and is very cool, very different from the first edition and in my opinion, much better. It’s a little SOFTER but also FASTER. It’s like running with rockets under your feet.
