Cornwall School Games & Whirlwind Sports join forces

Cornwall School Games & Whirlwind Sports join forces to inspire the young people of Cornwall to achieve their personal best!

Active Cornwall can confirm that Whirlwind Sports is the new partner for the Cornwall School Games ensuring over 32,000 young people in Cornwall have access to competitive sport and involving over 6,000 young people in county festivals.

The games, next year held on the 24th June in St Austell, will be supported and backed by Whirlwind Sports Ltd, which are based throughout Cornwall as well as online through www.whirlwindsports.com. They also have a Community Interest Company with the sole purpose to benefit the wider community (be that people, purpose or place) and to assist them in becoming the healthiest version of themselves possible.

CEO of Whirlwind Sports, Craig Billing said "We are very proud to be associated with the Cornwall School Games and to help promote activity within the Duchy" with Paul Billing, the founder, adding "We have been trading in the Duchy for over 30 years and all of our Whirlwind Sports family are very proud to partner with the Cornwall School Games"

Both organisations hope this collaboration will inspire young people in Cornwall to be the very best they can be and to raise aspirations for those young people to be active for life and represent their school in competitive school sport

Whirlwind Sports are currently running a campaign called #ChooseToMove and as Active Cornwall look to encourage all children in Cornwall to be physically active for 60 minutes a day it is a perfect partnership.

In Cornwall, the School Games is delivered by schools, National Governing Bodies of Sport, Active Cornwall, School Games Organisers and other local partners. Each year over 32,000 young people engage in an annual School Games programme to not only participate in competitive school sport but also to improve school attainment, emotional resilience and their health and wellbeing.

The Games also have a strong inclusive element resulting in more meaningful opportunities being available for young disabled and disengaged young people.

Megan Hilley, the School Games Organiser at Active Cornwall celebrated the partnership, saying "We know that Children and Young People that are more physically literate, are more likely to be active, with the biggest factor to engaging in sports and physical activity being enjoyment. If we can use this partnership to make the Games an enjoyable experience for the children and young people of Cornwall, then hopefully we will see a rise in the amount of young people getting involved in school sport and being more active."

Working together with Whirlwind Sports, Active Cornwall and local School Games Organisers aim to make a clear and meaningful difference to the lives of even more young people through the School Games and this partnership, along with the continued investment from Sport England into the national programme, enables us to achieve this ambition.

Julie Ponting, School Games Organiser from Arena Sports Partnerships in East Cornwall said: “We are extremely grateful to Whirlwind Sports for agreeing to be our headline partner for the School Games in Cornwall. This is part of a long-term partnership to enable the Cornwall School Games to provide even more young people with the opportunity to compete and achieve their personal best.”
