Let’s Lift the Curfew

Let’s Lift the Curfew: Reclaiming the Night, One Run at a Time
Why Running Is More Than Just Fitness
Running clears your head. It lifts your mood. It helps you sleep better, think sharper, and feel more like yourself. It’s not just about fitness. It’s about freedom.
When Darkness Changes the Routine
But when the evenings draw in, that freedom can feel out of reach. For many women, darker skies mean second-guessing routines:
Should I go?
Should I wait?
Should I skip it altogether?
You’re not imagining it. You’re not alone. And you’re not wrong to feel cautious.
72% of women in the UK change their outdoor activity routines during winter. One in four take well-lit routes. Nearly a quarter avoid certain areas. One in five glance behind them to check they’re not being followed. [Statistics from This Girl Can]
Backing the Campaign
At Whirlwind Sports, we’re backing This Girl Can’s Let’s Lift the Curfew campaign. Everyone deserves to move through their community with confidence - no matter the time of day.
If You Run After Dark
You don’t need to justify your run. But you deserve to feel safe while doing it. Here are a few ways to help make that happen:
Wear Kit That Gets You Seen
Visibility gear Reflective jackets, high-vis layers, head torches. We’ve got gear that helps you stand out, not blend in.
Run With Others
Community and safety There’s strength in numbers and joy too.

Let Someone Know Your Plan
Location sharing Share your route and ETA. Use WhatsApp, Snapchat, Apple’s location sharing or Strava’s Beacon feature to send live updates to up to three contacts.
Stick to Familiar, Well-Lit Routes
Route planning Choose places you know. Avoid shortcuts that feel sketchy in daylight, let alone after dark.
Keep Your Ears Open
Audio awareness If you’re listening to music, keep the volume low or use open-ear headphones so you can still hear what’s around you.
Carry ID and Emergency Info
Emergency prep A wristband, a card or a lock screen with your details can make a difference if something goes wrong.
Switch It Up
Routine variation Vary your routes and times when you can. It’s good for safety and good for your brain too.
Face the Traffic
Road safety If you’re on roads, run toward oncoming cars so you can see what’s coming.
Consider a Personal Alarm
Extra protection Small, simple and easy to carry. It’s one more layer of reassurance.
Listen to Your Gut
Intuition matters If something feels off, it probably is. Pause. Reroute. Head somewhere busier. You don’t owe anyone an explanation.
If You Love Someone Who Runs
Tips for allies and supporters
You don’t need to run to be part of this. Here’s how you can help:
Believe them – If they say they feel uneasy, trust that.
Be part of the plan – Check in. Offer to walk the first stretch. Help map out a route.
Speak up – If you hear someone downplaying women’s safety, challenge it. Even gently. It matters.

Call to action
This winter, we’re standing with women across the UK who are reclaiming their right to move freely after dark.
Come see us in-store or online. We’ve got the gear, the local club links and the time to talk. Your safety matters. So does your run.
